A display of photographs, drawings, and watercolors will be on view in the YCBA Study Room, in conjunction with the 4 pm book discussion on “The Idea of Italy: Photography and the British Imagination.”
The book examines how the new medium of photography influenced the British experience, appreciation, and perception of Italy in the nineteenth century.
A collaboration between Portuguese vocalist-composer Sara Serpa and Nigerian writer Emmanuel Iduma, drawing inspiration from Iduma’s book, A Stranger’s Pose, a unique blend of travelogue, musings and poetry. In a combination of music, text, image, and field recordings collected by Iduma during his travels, Intimate Strangers explores such themes as of movement, home, grief, absence, and desire in what Iduma calls “an atlas of a borderless world.”

The great social eruption of Russia in 1917 threw away the country’s intellect and soul. Among the great artists who escaped Russia and came to New York––like Rachmaninoff, Chaliapin, Gretchaninoff, Ziloti––was Vladimir Drozdoff. His music, inspired mostly by nostalgia for his lost Motherland, accumulated the memories and dreams by which Russian intellectuals lived in exile.
