Brexit expert Vernon Bogdanor CBE and Professor of Government at the Institute of Contemporary British History, King’s College, London, will give a series of four lectures this month on “Britain and Europe in a Troubled World” for the Henry L. Stimson Lectures on World Affairs at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale.
The “Britain and Europe in a Troubled World” lectures will focus on four themes: “Reserve but Proud Reserve. Britain Detached from Europe” on Monday, April 8; “The Pandora’s Box and the Trojan Horses. Britain in Europe” on Wednesday, April 10; and “Brexit means Brexit. Britain out of Europe” on Monday, April 15; and “Never Closer Union. Does the EU Have a Future” on Wednesday, April 17. All four lectures begin at 4:30 p.m. in Room 203, Henry R. Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Avenue. They are free and open to the public. The lectures are sponsored by the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies and the Yale University Press.
Bogdanor is a frequent contributor to TV, radio, and the press. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, an Honorary Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences. He has been an adviser to a number of governments, including those of Albania, Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Israel, Mauritius. Slovakia and Trinidad.
Bogdanor’s books include, Devolution; The People and the Party System: The Referendum and Electoral Reform in British Politics; Multi-Party Politics and the Constitution; Power and the People: A Guide to Constitutional Reform; Devolution in the United Kingdom; The New British Constitution and The Coalition and the Constitution. He is also editor of, amongst other books, The British Constitution in the 20th Century; Joined-Up Government; and From the New Jerusalem to New Labour: British Prime Ministers from Attlee to Blair. He is currently writing a book on the consequences of Brexit, as well as a multi-volume work on British political history from 1895 to 1997.
In 2008, Bogdanor was awarded the Sir Isaiah Berlin Award by the Political Studies Association for Lifetime Contribution to Political Studies. In 2009 he was made a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur by President Sarkozy. He is an Honorary Fellow of The Queen’s College, Oxford, an Honorary D. Litt. of the University of Kent, and an Honorary Bencher of the Middle Temple.
The funding for the lecture series comes from an anonymous donor, in honor of Henry L. Stimson, Yale College 1889, an attorney and statesman whose government service culminated with his tenure as secretary of war during World War II.
Since 1998, the MacMillan Center and the Yale University Press have collaborated to bring distinguished diplomats and foreign policy experts to the center to lecture on their books that are published by the Yale Press.
